Day 7: Sunday, April 19th
Immanuel! God with YOU! We have access to God's shelter 24/7/365, regardless of our short-comings. He is ready to fight perfectly against our worries, doubts, fears and weaknesses.
In my first year of college, I met a group of friends with a few guys who were very down to earth. The following year we all decided to live in the same off-campus apartment complex. As you can expect, we spent our weekend nights roaming the college town for parties. My girl friends and I were hesitant to go out and we would often rely on our guy friends to help us avoid any awkward run-ins. They "took us under their wings" to provide security.
Today's devotional reminded me of that time. I remember thinking how much I trusted them to protect us because they told us they would take us under their wings. The reality: their wings weren't perfect - but God's are.
"As you snuggle under My wings, you will not only find refuge; you will also discover a growing ability to trust Me. It is in closeness to Me that you realize how trustworthy I am."
His wings are trustworthy and persistent. When we rest under them, at any given moment, we will find refuge there, close to Him. So, why is it we can so easily put so much trust in our friends to protect us? Our family? Our marriage? Our finances? Our careers? What are we choosing over God for refuge? Whose wings are we finding ourselves under?
Discussion: Looking back in your life, identify a time you found refuge in an unstable place. How were you able to come to that realization? Then, what did you do to ensure you leaned into God's Presence instead?
Psalm 46:1-2 reads "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way..."
Matthew 23:37 reads "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing."
Psalm 91:4 reads "He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart."
