Culture & Context: Romans
Romans is Paul’s longest letter, written around AD 57. There is no question of authorship, as Paul identifies
himself as the writer in his greeting (Romans. 1:1-7). Paul had a secretary named Tertius who did the
actually writing (Rom. 16:22 I Tertius, who wrote this letter, greet you in the Lord.), which was customary in
a time when writing was done with scarce resources. We think nothing of writing something and re-writing it
as we edit, because we don’t have to write on pap


Culture & Context: Judges
Judges in the time of the Old Testament were both legal and political. During the time of Moses, the elders of the tribes acted as judges in settling disputes. Samuel and his sons were circuit-riding judges, traveling to different towns to act as judge.

After years of wandering, the sinful generation (except for Joshua and Caleb) had died out, Moses had passed the torch of leadership
The Bible has five “poetry” books: Job (yup, Job is considered poetry, as well as wisdom literature), Psalms,
Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and the Song of Solomon (which is one of the most explicit love poems ever
