What does the rest of the world believe?
The world at large does not believe in the Genesis story of Creation. The world in its denial has had a need to provide itself with an explanation of how the world and all that we see could come to pass without the existence of an all-powerful God. So, what did the world come up with to replace the loving God?
Time.
Time is really the answer that most scientist run to in order to replace God. Since the processes and patterns they claim form our reality are not observable, they must have taken place long ago, before people, so that they can reasonably assert that they are real, but not seen.
But how does time help? With what processes and patterns does time provide an answer?
If you are anything like me, it’s been a while since high school Earth Science class. If you attended public school, this was an important part of the education the secular world has wanted you to believe. Let’s take a look at what the world teaches students – our kids, really – and then as we continue this series, we can identify some of the problems with this teaching and learn how to find a better solution to the questions of life.
The Big Bang
First off, the beginning. The Big Bang. Secular science believes that billions of years ago, somewhere around 14 billion to be exact, all of the matter and energy in the universe was condensed down to a single superdense point. At this point, this superdense point exploded outward, spinning, and the matter condense and cooled and became stars and other planetary bodies. These stars provided heat and sometimes spun out fragments that cooled and became planets. Gravity pulled these planets into orbit and moons were captured fragments that began to spin around the planets.
And so, from nothing came everything we see in our telescopes.
This took an immense amount of time, but after even more time, water condensed on earth and different chemicals mixed into a primordial ooze, out of which formed complex molecules and proteins and finally, the first single-celled organisms. These organisms developed further into multi-celled organisms and eventually, over millions and millions of years, we reached the level of fish. Many more millions of years passed, and these fish decided to leave the water and live on the land. The fish grew legs and became reptiles and amphibians.
As we moved into the Mesozoic Era, the reptiles reached their peak and the dinosaurs ruled the Earth. The Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods marked the rule of the massive creatures but all came to an end 65 million years ago with a massive asteroid that crashed into the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico. Massive tidal waves, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and climate changes wiped out the dinosaurs, except for a few that seem to have lived for some reason but changed dramatically around this time.
These dinosaurs are believed to have had feathers and, over many more millions of years, the feathers developed more, the lizard dinosaurs became modern day birds. To a secular scientist, a chicken is a type of dinosaur. As a matter of fact, the dinosaurs you think of when you hear the word are now called ‘non-avian dinosaurs,’ meaning a non-bird dinosaur.
Through these millions of years, we reached the age of mammals, the Cenozoic, where we had mammoths, saber-toothed cats and sloths bigger than a grizzly bear. And into this world the first primates entered.
Primates are the group that includes monkeys, apes and, to the secular scientist, humans.
These monkeys grew and changed and eventually began walking upright. They developed language, fire, the wheel and hunting and eventually farming.
The secular scientist considers modern man to be just the latest iteration of gorillas or chimps. We are evolved.
This system of evolving was “discovered” by Charles Darwin who sailed onboard his ship, The Beagle, to the Galapagos Islands and studied finches. These little birds showed some variations and the varieties were believed by Darwin to be examples of evolution. He felt these showed that the birds changed over time to be more suited to their environment and that over enough time, birds and other animals could change type entirely.
This system has been held for many years at this point and though what is described above has shifted and been changed many times, the basics remain the same.
So, what is the point of me sharing all of this? What lesson could we possibly pull from the above description? The point is our own sin.
“But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.” - 2 Peter 3:5
That phrase, “deliberately forget,” is a pointed denial of man that the world will choose not to believe in creation of the world. The very action the non-believers take is prophesied by God thousands of years ago. It is amazing that even in their rebellion against God, they prove the truth of God’s word. In our evil hearts we want our own way.
We want to follow what we want more than what God wants.
In the end, many had to come up with some way to cut God out of the picture. The Big Bang and evolution provide this answer to those people.
So, why do so many believe in the secular story of our origins?
Rebellion.
It’s an act of defiance against God. Anyone who seeks truth and will accept God’s teaching will find the Bible and science – seen through Biblical principles – do a far better job of teaching us how everything got here.
Now we see what the secular world at large believes. But what are the correct answers?
How old is the world if not billions of years?
How did all the different types of animals get here if they were not evolving?
Where did man come from?
And what did really happen to the dinosaurs?
We will cover all that in future installments, starting with the age of the Earth.
Until next time, keep wondering,
