Before we share Psalm 1, if you're new here, let's answer a common question: What is SOAP?

SOAP is a simple yet powerful method for engaging with scripture daily: Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It begins with reading and reflecting on a Bible verse, moves into observing what God is saying, applies these truths to your life, and concludes with heartfelt prayer. This approach encourages not just reading but living out God’s word, providing a solid foundation for spiritual growth.

Diving into Psalm 1

psalm 1:2-3 scripture true north church pittsburgh

Scripture

“Blessed is the man who’s…delight is in the Law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water…in all he does, he prospers.” – Psalm 1:2-3

Observation

It is DELIGHT IN and MEDITATION ON God’s word CONSISTENTLY that brings BLESSING. The word blessed means, "to be happy" or filled with joy. There is a JOY that comes from pursuing the Lord. The Psalmist uses the illustration of being "planted by streams of water. That when we plant ourselves firmly in the "Word of God" that we will "bear fruit in season." Meaning when we love the Word and follow it our lives will produce good things. Even if sometimes you don't see a noticeable return right away. This is the promise for those who "delight in and meditate on the law of the Lord."

Application

The problem for me and so many others is that I don't keep myself planted by the stream (His Word) that brings blessing. But I want to be PLANTED by the “water." I want to be in the word, deeply rooted so that I bear fruit. Too often I let the distractions and temptations of this world; stress, busyness, pride, etc. “uproot “me. And when I get away from His stream, I quickly become dry. I begin to lose joy and impact in the world. And I don’t ever want to be dry. I want to constantly be connected to the source of blessing, His living water!

Prayer

Lord, keep me planted in your word. Keep my heart from wandering and meditating on things that will only leave me feeling dry. And fill me with your delight as I pursue you, Father. Amen.
